At the end of C Shift just before shift change a local commuter traveling on Hwy 484 found four baby possums near their mother who was killed while trying to cross the road. Not knowing what to do with the young possums, and having to continue to work, she delivered all four to Firehouse18.
The problem was promptly dropped onto A Shifts lap as C Shift ended their shift.
After multiple calls to the Animal Shelter, various Wildlife Rescues, and Animal Control no animal group was found to take the young possums. A Shift decided to care for critters until a suitable home could be found.
After research online it was determined that they were approximately 6-8 weeks of age and that they could be given Gatorade for hydration. In an attempt to find someone to care for them the possums were placed into E18 for a quick ride to the animal shelter on Baseline Road. While en route to the facility E18 was placed onto a commercial fire alarm in Station 28's first due zone. Despite being cancelled en route, the response marks the first time any possum has responded to a structure fire.
After shift change the following moring the possums were taken to Silver Springs where they were accepted.
