A Shift is First Due to Structure Fire **VIDEO POSTED**
Mon. Oct 12th 2009
Just after 2 pm, after running fourteen calls, Engine18 was assigned to the first alarm for a residential structure fire. E18 arrived first on scene to find a one story, residental structure with fire in 25% of the attic. E18 forced entry and began an aggressive interior attack with a 1 3/4" preconnect. A water supply was secured by E30 who assisted with the attack and protection of exposures. District3 arrived on scene and assumed command. Due to conditions he ordered an evacuation of the structure and a change to defensive tactics. All interior units withdrew and were accounted for during a PAR (personnel accountablility report).
Crews where hampered by temps in the 90's and propane gas lines in the attic that intensified the fire.
Exterior lines and a ground monitor knocked down the bulk of the fire before crews where allowed to again make entry and extinguish remaining fire and perform salvage/overhaul.
70% of the home was saved, although it did receive water damage. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical.
This was the first ride along on any MCFR unit for the new department Chaplain Joe LaCognata. Congrats to Chaplain Joe for his first working fire with MCFR!
